Neural Representations of Covert Attention across Saccades: Comparing Pattern Similarity to Shifting and Holding Attention during Fixation

چکیده
Abstract We can focus visuospatial attention by covertly attending to relevant locations, moving our eyes, or both simultaneously. How does shifting versus holding covert during fixation compare with maintaining across saccades? acquired human fMRI data a combined saccade and task. On Eyes-fixed trials, participants either held at the same initial location (“hold attention”) shifted another midway through trial (“shift attention”). Eyes-move made trial, while in one of two reference frames: “retinotopic attention” condition involved fixation-relative but different screen-centered location, whereas “spatiotopic on relative fixation. localized brain network sensitive shifts (shift > hold attention), used multivoxel pattern time course (MVPTC) analyses investigate patterns activity for spatiotopic retinotopic saccades. In shift network, we found transient information about whether were saccades executed. Moreover, this conditions represented more similarly than attention. An exploratory searchlight analysis revealed additional regions where was relatively similar holding. Thus, may involve types updating that vary similarity “hold” “shift” signals regions.

Allocation of attention across saccades.
Whenever the eyes move, spatial attention must keep track of the locations of targets as they shift on the retina. This study investigated transsaccadic updating of visual attention to cued targets. While observers prepared a saccade, we flashed an irrelevant, but salient, color cue in their visual periphery and measured the allocation of spatial attention before and after the saccade using a t...
متن کاملSaccades and covert shifts of attention during active visual search: Spatial distributions, memory, and items per fixation
Target detection during active visual search was examined. The chance corrected spatial distribution of target detection was found to be symmetrically distributed around the point of fixation and, unexpectedly, was independent of the proximity of fixations to the display boundaries. Memory was found to play a very limited role in target detection, but a significant role in the guidance of eye m...
متن کاملMicrosaccade dynamics during covert attention
We compared effects of covert spatial-attention shifts induced with exogenous or endogenous cues on microsaccade rate and direction. Separate and dissociated effects were obtained in rate and direction measures. Display changes caused microsaccade rate inhibition, followed by sustained rate enhancement. Effects on microsaccade direction were differentially tied to cue class (exogenous vs. endog...
متن کاملCortical mechanisms for shifting and holding visuospatial attention.
Access to visual awareness is often determined by covert, voluntary deployments of visual attention. Voluntary orienting without eye movements requires decoupling attention from the locus of fixation, a shift to the desired location, and maintenance of attention at that location. We used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging to dissociate these components while observers shifted a...
متن کاملSpatiotopic neural representations develop slowly across saccades
One of the long-standing unsolved mysteries of visual neuroscience is how the world remains apparently stable in the face of continuous movements of eyes, head and body. Many factors seem to contribute to this stability, including rapid updating mechanisms that temporarily remap the visual input to compensate for the impending saccade. However, there is also a growing body of evidence pointing ...
